The Iowa Legislature has not been adequately funding our public schools for several years. Accordingly, we are in no position to start diverting funds from our public schools to pay for private school or homeschool students. Supplemental State Aid (SSA) has been on a downward trend, from 4 percent between 20 to an average of 1.8 percent since 2010. SSA for this year was set by Iowa lawmakers at 1.11 percent, its second-lowest level in 15 years. The increase did not even keep up with inflation.
